Frontier Intensive Training – Foundational Christian Beliefs
February 20 @ 8:00 am - February 24 @ 5:00 pm
Melbourne School of Theology is excited to offer two units as intensives at its MST-Frontier Port Macquarie campus in the first semester of 2023 in collaboration with MST-Frontier School of Mission. The units can be applied toward either an accredited Certificate/Graduate Certificate (4 units) or a Diploma/Graduate Diploma (8 units) or can be taken as an audit for those who would simply like to sit in on the lectures and do the readings.
This unit, taught by Dr Mark Worthing, pastor of St Peter’s Lutheran Church, Port Macquarie, is an introduction to basic Christian beliefs.
The unit examines Christian teachings with a focus on the mission of the church. The material is structured around the Church Year, giving it a practical focus for worship.
We begin with Advent and the preparation for the coming of Jesus, look at the incarnation of God at Christmas, reflect on Jesus’ death and resurrection as commemorated on Good Friday and Easter, the Holy Spirit as celebrated at Pentecost, then Trinity Sunday, the doctrine of the Church for the Pentecost season, and finish with a celebration of the coming of Christ the King, which we celebrate on the last Sunday of the Church Year.
Books to consider reading in preparation for this unit:
- Mark Worthing. This is Most Certainly True: Learning Jesus Christ through Luther’s Small Catechism (ACR 2022)
- Hans Schwarz. The Christian Faith: A Creedal Statement (Baker, 2014)
